Nazca, Paracas and the Ballestas Islands

3 Days

Tour Overview

Travel along Peru’s desert coast to experience the wildlife of Paracas and the Ballestas Islands before discovering the enigmatic Nazca Lines. This journey brings together marine ecosystems, desert landscapes and two of Peru’s most important pre-Columbian cultures.

Historical and Cultural Background

The Paracas culture flourished on Peru’s south coast and is renowned for sophisticated textiles and funerary traditions. Centuries later, Nazca communities created enormous geoglyphs across the desert between roughly 200 BCE and 600 CE. Their precise purpose remains debated; ritual movement, water symbolism and sacred landscapes are among the principal interpretations. The Ballestas Islands add a different chapter, with wildlife-rich waters sustained by the Humboldt Current and a history linked to guano extraction.
